About Us
Founded in 2022, the Mlwandle Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing socio-economic and environmental challenges in South Africa, with a focus on KwaZulu-Natal’s Harry Gwala District. Inspired by Mlwandle, a visionary traditional leader, we champion self-reliance, community development, and innovative solutions to societal challenges.
Our initiatives are grounded in the pressing need to tackle high unemployment rates, poverty, and inequality. From the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic to the unrest in 2021, we recognize the urgency of empowering communities to achieve sustainable development.

We create impactful programs that promote self-reliance, provide essential resources, and foster sustainable livelihoods. By addressing pressing socio-economic and environmental challenges, we aim to build resilient communities and drive positive change across South Africa.
Food
Security
- Emerging Farmers Support:
- Establishing and supporting cooperatives to provide training, resources, and access to markets for farmers.
- Providing support by mechanization.
- Facilitating access to advanced farming tools, seeds, and technology to improve productivity and sustainability.
- Establishing animal infrastructure (dip pans and grazing camps).
- Introduction of commercial breed bulls to commercialize the breed of cattle in rural areas.
- Communal Gardens:
- Identification of unutilized areas in traditional areas for communal gardens.
- Provide tools and equipment for the infrastructure.
- Community members must set up the structures themselves (fencing and irrigation system).
- Provide technical advice to participating communities.
- Surplus produce to be donated to poor and bereaved families.
Environmental Management
- Take initiatives in waste management in rural areas and strategic roads.
- Implementing reforestation and afforestation projects to combat deforestation and restore biodiversity.
- Support waste management and recycling programs to reduce pollution.
- Educating communities on climate change adaptation strategies.
- Collaborating with authorities to design and execute disaster risk reduction plans.
- Take part in invasive alien plant eradication.
- Support clean-up events and community awareness in local municipalities.
- Clean and safe environment that can attract tourists.
- Improved ecosystem health and reduced environmental risks.
- Increased community awareness and engagement in environmental conservation.
- Enhanced resilience to climate change and natural disasters.
Youth and Women Empowerment
- Provision of hygienic packs to rural young girls (est. 2000 a year).
- Support back-to-school campaigns annually.
- Conducting career awareness and online application to selected schools annually.
- Provision of driving licenses to unemployed graduates, youth with and without matric (max of 20 a year).
- Conducting skill-building workshops and vocational training programs tailored to local market demands.
- Offering entrepreneurship and leadership development opportunities.
- Creating mentorship programs to guide youth and women in pursuing careers or business ventures.
- Addressing barriers such as limited access to education, funding, and resources
Disaster
Management
- Do environmental scanning in wards as prioritized by local municipalities.
- Do household assessment that are prone to disasters.
- Facilitate fire breaks and tree planting.
- Support responses to disaster victims in collaboration with municipalities.
- Take initiatives in waste management in rural areas and strategic roads.
- Do awareness campaigns in strategic communities.
- Minimized disasters.
- Improved human dignity.
- Reduced expenditure cost to government due to disasters.
Our Impact
